Lt Gen (ret) Steven R. Polk retired in February 2006 as the Inspector General of the Air Force.  A native Texan, General Polk graduated and was commissioned from the U.S. Air Force Academy in June 1968 with a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering. He also graduated from Arizona State University with a master of science in engineering and from the Naval War College with a master of arts in national security and strategic studies. He is a command pilot with nearly 4,500 hours, primarily in the T-37, T-38, T-6, F-111 and the F-16. He commanded a tactical fighter squadron, a tactical training wing, an operations group, two fighter wings, and a numbered air force.  Additionally, he was the vice commander and director of operations at Headquarters Pacific Air Forces and assistant chief of staff for operations at Headquarters Allied Air Forces Northwestern Europe (NATO).  During his more than 37 years of active duty, he spent 10 years in Europe and six years in the Pacific.

Since retirement, he has served on the board of directors of Sourcefire, Inc., a publicly traded cyber security company; of the Order of Daedalians, the non-profit fraternity of military pilots; and of the Air Force Security Forces Foundation.  He presently is chairman of the board of Sourcefire and the national commander and chairman of the board of the Order of Daedalians.  He also co-chairs the Air Force Retiree Council, an organization that reports to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force on retiree matters, and the Military Affairs Committee of the Valero Texas Open here in San Antonio.  He is active in various civic organizations including the San Antonio Rotary Club, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, and the Sons of the Republic of Texas.

He and his wife, Henrietta, reside in Universal City, Texas, with their labs, George and Wellington, and enjoy living near their son and granddaughter.  His hobbies are golf, reading, and traveling.
