Dr. Kalmin has served as the President/Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) since 1983. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1971 in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa and immigrated to the United States with his wife, Jenny and two children in 1976.

He completed a residency in Clinical Pathology at the State University of New York in Buffalo, N.Y. and became interested in blood banking while moonlighting in the apheresis unit of the American Red Cross Blood Services.

He was certified by the American Board of Pathology in clinical pathology (in 1980) and blood banking (in 1981) and moved to Atlanta where he served as the Associate Medical Director for the Red Cross and was appointed to the clinical faculty at Emory University School of Medicine.

Twenty five years ago, he was selected to direct the STBTC’s blood services which has expanded into tissue services, the bone marrow program and the Texas Cord Blood Bank (TCBB). Last year, STBTC established QualTex Laboratories to perform infectious disease testing for STBTC as well as other blood centers and biotechnology customers.

A highlight of Dr. Kalmin’s career was his election in 2006 to the board of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT), and then, in 2008 to the Vice Presidency of that organization. He also participates in other professional organizations, including the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) and America’s Blood Centers. Locally, he is a member of the Bexar County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association.

He has published dozens of articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and has made numerous presentations at local, national and international meetings.
