Kenneth P. Trevett is the President and CEO of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (”SFBR”) in San Antonio, Texas, beginning his duties there as of September 29, 2008. SFBR was organized in 1941 by founder Tom Slick and has since become one of the premier research institutes in the country, with a doctoral level staff of over 70 people and a total employee complement of 400 people. It has major scientific programs in genetics and virology/ immunology, addressing a variety of conditions and illnesses including heart and circulatory disease, mental disorders, emerging infections, cancer, fetal development, diabetes, and obesity, to name just a few.
Mr. Trevett has worked as a senior manager/administrator and legal counsel in biomedical research/education/clinical service institutions for 30 years. He began his work in this field in 1979 when he became Assistant Dean for Administration at the then new Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine (Boston, MA). He subsequently has worked as Assistant to the Director and House Counsel at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine (1982-1989), the first General Counsel of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (l989-l996), Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, MA (l996-2001), and President and CEO of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (2001-2008).
Mr. Trevett has negotiated hundreds of agreements involving technology transfer between industrial and academic organizations, has lectured and consulted extensively in this field, and between l997 and 2001, served as an Adjunct Faculty member of the Suffolk University Law School in Boston, MA where he taught a course on that subject. He is the author and co-developer of a CD-Rom on the licensing of academic technology. He has overseen several scientific misconduct investigations and has handled a variety of patient care issues involving right to treatment, right to refuse treatment and other sensitive matters. He served as President of the Association of Independent Research Institutes (volunteer position) from l993-l995.
In addition to his leadership role with SFBR, Mr. Trevett is active in a variety of city and regional organizations as he believes that community service is an important responsibility for people in roles such as his. He is a Board Member of BioMed SA and the Texas Research and Technology Foundation, a member of the Advisory Committee of South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics (START), and a member of the Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute
Mr. Trevett was a recipient of the Harvard Book Award for Community Service and Contributions to Business and Law from the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Southern California in 2003. He received the Manager of the Year Award in 2003 and the “Silver Knight of Management” Award in 2006, both from the Harbor Chapter of the National Management Association. He was also honored by the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of California in 2008 for his efforts to support biomedical research in the United States. He and his wife Barbara were honored by the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute in November, 2008 for their service to that organization.
Mr. Trevett is a graduate of Colgate University (with honors in English) and Suffolk University Law School (cum laude). He is married to Barbara K. Trevett. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
