Dr. Louis J. Agnese, Jr., has been president of the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio since 1985, when at the age of 34 he became one of the youngest presidents of a four-year institution of higher learning in the United States.

During his term, UIW’s enrollment has increased from 1,298 in 1985 to 6,703 in 2008, making UIW the fourth-largest private university in Texas. UIW also added the only pharmacy program at a private university in Texas; one of only two optometry programs in the state at a private or public university; and the only collegiate scholarship football program in San Antonio.

Dr. Agnese is the recipient of many professional and civic honors. He was recognized for his contributions to higher education in San Antonio when he was chosen as the recipient of the 2006 Ford Salute to Education Lifetime Achievement Award. Other honors include being named one of Five Outstanding Young Americans as well as one of Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World in 1989.

Dr. Agnese is a past board member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and a former Chairman of the Partnership for Hope, a Rockefeller Foundation poverty project. He’s currently a board member of Adelante!-U.S. Education Leadership Fund, and serves on the executive committee of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. He is also a board member of MATT.org – Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together – an online think tank that seeks to promote positive dialogue between Mexico and the U.S. that helps each country find solutions to common problems.

Dr. Agnese holds the Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Pittsburgh. A native of New York City, he is married and has two grown children.
