LTG (Ret) Frank Ledford was sworn in as the thirty-seventh Surgeon General of the Army on June 16, 1988. General Ledford was born in Jacksonville, Florida on 22 April 1934. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Dayton and was awarded his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati. General Ledford’s additional medical specialty training includes an internship at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas; a pre-specialty surgical residency at Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; an orthopaedic surgery residency at Letterman Army Medical Center, San Francisco, California; and a residency in children’s surgery at the Phoenix Arizona Crippled Children’s Hospital. His military education includes the Army Medical Department Basic and Advanced Officer courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

General Ledford held a variety of important command, staff, and clinical positions. Prior to becoming The Surgeon General, he held assignments to include Commanding General, Seventh Medical Command/Surgeon, United States Army Europe and Seventh Army; Commanding General, Letterman Army Medical Center, Presidio of San Francisco, California; Chief, Medical Corps Affairs and Director of Professional Services, Office of the Surgeon General; Commander, Army Medical Department Activity and Martin Army Hospital, and Director of Health Services for the Infantry Center, Fort Benning, Georgia; and Commander, Army Medical Department Activity and Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas. He also served as the Chief of Surgery for a 400 bed evacuation hospital in Viet Nam; Deputy Commander of the United States Army Hospital in Heidelberg, West Germany; and Assistant Surgical Consultant to The Surgeon General and Chief of the Graduate Medical Education for the Army Medical Department.

General Ledford’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion Of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (with oak leaf cluster), the National,Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, the Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal (with two stars), the Republic of Viet Nam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation (with palm), Overseas Bars (2), the Overseas Service Ribbon (with numeral 3), and the Army Service Ribbon. General Ledford is one of the few American officers to have been awarded the Cross of Honor in Gold by the Federal Republic of Germany.

General Ledford retired on 30 June 1992 with over thirty three years of service.

He is married to the former Marilyn Kain of Troy, Ohio.  They have one daughter Cheryl Lynn.
